Birth of Venus (Botticelli)

The Birth of Venus or Nascita di Venere painting by Sandro Botticelli is one of the most famous mythological paintings from the Early Renaissance period. 

It depicts the goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a full grown woman, arriving at the sea-shore (which is related to the Venus Anadyomene motif). 

The Birth of Venus was made for home display, possibly for the Villa di Castello, Italy, which belonged to Lorenzo de Medici in 1486 ca.

It was painted on canvas, a support that was widely used throughout the 15th century for decorative works destined to noble houses.
